I really loved my RC 120 GRAVL but gave it away to a friend and decided to upgrade to something worth investing in as my dream road and gravel bike. When I was on the hunt for a new gravel bike, the 2024 RC 520 Gravel Bike from Decathlon quickly stood out. What first grabbed my attention was the inclusion of Shimano 105 shifters and derailleurs. Getting that level of kit at this price point is rare, and it made me curious enough to take a closer look.
I’m glad I did.
First Impressions of the RC 520
The RC 520 looks even better in person. The colour is stylish yet understated – enough personality to feel special, but not so loud that it’s over the top. The relaxed geometry was another huge selling point for me. I wanted a bike that would be comfortable for long days on the road but still feel stable and confident when heading off onto gravel tracks. On that score, the RC 520 delivers beautifully.
Shimano 105 and Praxis Drivetrain
The Shimano 105 groupset was the big attraction, and it doesn’t disappoint. Gear changes are smooth, accurate, and reliable, whether I’m climbing steep hills or cruising on the flat. The addition of Praxis chainrings and cranks rounds out the drivetrain with a solid, quality feel that inspires confidence. I get that it was a bit of cost cutting by Decathlon, but it all works well together.
Tyres and Brakes
My RC 520 came fitted with 40mm Hutchinson Touareg tyres, which have been a pleasant surprise. They roll pretty quickly on tarmac but still grip well on gravel – a good all-rounder for mixed riding.
For stopping power, the bike uses TRP HY/RD cable-operated hydraulic piston brakes. They’re a clever compromise between mechanical and full hydraulic systems. The braking feels sharp and controlled, with more power than standard mechanicals, but without the maintenance headaches of a full hydraulic setup. In use I love them.
Ride Quality on Road and Gravel
On the road, the RC 520 Gravel Bike feels smooth, stable, and comfortable – a bike built for long-distance rides without beating you up. On gravel, it shines as well, with a balanced ride that feels planted and predictable. It’s not twitchy, which makes it great for riders who want confidence on looser terrain.
Value for Money
This is where the RC 520 really wins. For the price, the combination of Shimano 105 shifting, Praxis crankset, HY/RD brakes, and Hutchinson tyres is outstanding. Many bikes at this level cut corners, but the RC 520 feels well thought out, with components that genuinely enhance the ride experience.
Final Thoughts
The Decathlon RC 520 Gravel Bike (2024) may not be the flashiest bike on the market, but it’s one of the most thoughtfully equipped and best-value options I’ve come across. With its relaxed geometry, great looks, reliable drivetrain, and smart component choices, it’s a bike that punches far above its price point.
I’ve been delighted with mine and would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a capable all-rounder that can cover road and gravel with equal ease.
